Electric Citi Bikes have recently been the center of attention – and not in a good way. The brakes on the pedal-assist Citi Bikes have been faulty, causing serious injuries to the riders. Bicyclists hurt themselves after they slam on the brakes and hurtle over the handlebars.
At first, these riders blamed themselves for the injuries. However, the victims are now changing their minds as they realize that the injuries are resulting from the faulty electric Citi Bikes. This was further confirmed when Citi Bike pulled from service its entire 1,000 electric pedal-assist bikes because of a problem with their brakes. The fleet of e-bikes has also been pulled from Washington D.C. and the Bay Area.
The bicycle accident victims injured as a result of the faulty brakes on the Citi Bikes are lawyering up and filing suit against the company for their resulting damages.
The Problem with Citi Bike Brakes
According to some bicycle experts, Citi Bike may have poorly designed its electric bikes. The electrics use brakes from Japan-based parts maker Shimano. A spokesman for the Shimano claims Citi Bike misused the company’s products in building its electric models. The spokesman reiterates that this is not a Shimano brake issue because Citi Bike failed to build its bicycle according to Shimano specifications. More specifically, Citi Bike failed to use power modulators on ebike brakes, which are supposed to make it easier to control braking.
Lyft, the company that operates the Citi Bike system, is working to find the root cause of the issue that has crippled so many riders. Meanwhile, the injured riders are entitled to compensation.
