EDWARD P. MILSTEIN was born and raised on the upper west side of Manhattan. He graduated from Ramaz High School in 1966, received his B.A. from New York University in 1970 and graduated with a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1974. Mr. Milstein was admitted to practice law in New York State in 1975 and in New Jersey in 1983.
Upon graduation from law school Mr. Milstein joined the law firm of Harry H. Lipsig, undisputedly one of the most accomplished trial lawyers of that time. Mr. Lipsig had the foresight to recognize that medical malpractice litigation, then only in its infancy, would require the practitioner to combine medical knowledge with specific litigation techniques. In 1975 the law firm established a medical malpractice department devoted exclusively to representing patients harmed by physicians and hospital staff in the course of medical care and treatment. Mr. Milstein joined the medical malpractice department and in 1977 was elevated to the head of the department at the age of 28.
Over the ensuing sixteen years he chaired the medical malpractice department of the firm, which by 1994 was known as Sullivan and Liapakis, P.C. In those sixteen years the medical malpractice department grew to a ten attorney department. At any given time its caseload varied from 300 to 400 cases. Mr. Milstein’s imprint was on each of them. During his tenure with Sullivan and Liapakis, P.C. Mr. Milstein was involved in more than 3000 cases taking 2500 depositions of medical practitioners in every field of medicine. Mr. Milstein was trial counsel in over 200 trials with 20 verdicts exceeding 1 million dollars over these years. Total settlements and verdicts exceeded half a billion dollars during his 20-year tenure at the Lipsig firm. During these early years Mr. Milstein acquired a wealth of medical knowledge and gained the respect of the medical malpractice defense bar, personnel in medical malpractice insurance companies and judges presiding over the medical malpractice trial parts. Three important constituencies.
All of this experience laid the groundwork for the formation of the law firm of Dankner & Milstein, P.C. founded by Edward P. Milstein and Jay W. Dankner in 1994. At its inception the ideology of the firm was geared to providing individualized and specialized attention to cases primarily in the areas of medical malpractice and products liability.
Over the last 28 years, Mr. Milstein has maintained his focus exclusively in the area of medical malpractice litigation. Dankner Milstein, P.C. retains and consults with top quality prominent experts which is one of the keys to their success. The firm has handled over 1,500 medical malpractice cases resulting in more than 250 million dollar plus settlement. Mr. Milstein has added an additional 35 million dollar verdicts to his resume.
Mr. Milstein has lectured extensively and appeared on numerous television broadcasts including the Oprah Show, Geraldo Rivera, Montel Williams and as a commentator on Court TV on numerous occasions. He has been named to every best lawyer list including Super Lawyers, Best New York Lawyers, AV rating by Martindale Hubbell, The New York Law Journal, The National Trial Lawyers and U.S News and World Report Tier 1 for medical malpractice litigation.
