Investigation Underway After Teen Girl Died in Collision With Commercial Vehicle Making Right Turn in East Village
EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN (October 2, 2026) – A 15-year-old girl tragically died in an East Village truck accident near the intersection of E. 14th St. and First Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the collision occurred on September 18. The girl was reportedly riding with a passenger when their bicycle was struck by a large commercial truck making a right turn.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help both of the victims. One girl was reportedly transferred to the hospital with serious injuries.
Sadly, another girl did not survive her injuries and was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Liability for East Village Truck Accidents
Every person operating a motor vehicle in New York has a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians and cyclists. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code Section 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Truck drivers should take a number of actions to avoid colliding with any cyclist.
- They must maintain a proper lookout at all times.
- They should check their blind spots before attempting to complete any turn at an intersection.
- They should use their turning signals and horn when necessary to alert pedestrians and cyclists of their presence.
- They should abstain from alcohol or intoxicating substances that could impair their ability to operate a vehicle safely.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any cyclist in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Consider, for example, Fernandez v. Ortiz, 183 A.D.3d 443 (2020). That case involved a cyclist who was injured after being hit by a truck. The court ultimately held that the driver of the truck failed to exercise due care. They also said that the recording of the incident contradicted the truck driver’s accounting of what happened.
