NYPD Investigating Fatal Bicycle Accident After 71-Year-Old Man Collided With Off-Leash Dog
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (October 6, 2026) – A 71-year-old man has tragically died in a Central Park bicycle accident near E. 84th Street.
New York City officials are saying that the accident occurred around 8:30 AM on Monday morning. A bicyclist was going through the park when he was apparently involved in a collision with an off-leash dog.
The victim fell from his bicycle and sustained major injuries to his head and body. First responders rushed to the scene of the accident and transported the victim to New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Sadly, he was beyond medical assistance and pronounced deceased at the scene. A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for New York City Accidents Involving Dogs
Dog owners in New York have a legal obligation to exercise reasonable care under the circumstances to prevent foreseeable sources of harm. New York City Health Code § 161.05 generally requires that dogs in public spaces are restrained on leashes that are no longer than 6 feet. There are certain exceptions in authorized parks. Courts will typically review a number of questions to evaluate any liability for a collision involving an off-leash dog.
- Courts will review whether or not the dog was properly restrained and where the incident took place.
- Courts will take into consideration whether the owner used reasonable precautions to prevent it from entering into any bicycle route.
- Courts will also look at the police report created after the incident.
When a dog owner fails to use ordinary care and allows their animal to be involved in a collision, they could be legally responsible for any resulting injuries. Consider, for example, the Court of Appeals in Flanders v. Goodfellow. That case involved a postal worker who was seriously injured after being bitten by the homeowner’s dog as they were delivering a package. The court held that the dog owner could potentially be liable under ordinary negligence principles.
