One Person Killed, 10 Injured in Bronx Apartment Fire

Morris Heights, Bronx Apartment Fire Resulted in 1 Death After Man Jumped From Building

Four Injured in Newark Gas Explosion Accident

MORRIS HEIGHTS, BRONX (September 24, 2026) – One person was killed and another 10 people were injured in a Morris Heights, Bronx apartment fire on Montgomery Avenue near 174th St.

New York City officials are saying that the incident occurred around 7:45 AM on Wednesday morning. Multiple firefighting trucks and paramedics were called to the scene to help all of the victims.

A man in his 40s apparently died due to the severe nature of his injuries. Another 31-year-old man is in critical but stable condition after jumping from the building to escape the fire.

Liability for Morris Heights Apartment Fires

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition. This necessitates that they abide by all fire and building codes set forth under New York City Administrative Code § 27-2005. Maintaining buildings in a safe condition requires that apartment units have functional smoke detectors that actually warn residents about fires. There are many ways that an apartment owner could’ve acted negligently in any instance where a person is injured in a fire.

  • An apartment owner may have failed to ensure that the building had unobstructed ingress and egress points.
  • An apartment owner may have failed to conduct routine inspections and maintenance of their electrical systems.
  • An apartment owner may have improperly stored flammable materials.
  • An apartment owner may not have provided fire extinguishers where they should have.

When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of residential fires are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. This right extends to the family members of any person who died.
