Two electric bike riders died in New York City accidents as a result of losing control of their bikes while no other vehicles were involved since the beginning of this year. Investigations are still pending on each death.
On Thursday, January 6th around 2:45 p.m., a 26 year old e-bike rider was on Ralph Avenue near Avenue D in Flatbush when he lost control of his e-bike and fell to the ground. Emergency responders found him unconscious in the street and rushed him to the hospital. Although he was alive when he arrived at the emergency room, he died less than 12 hours later from internal injuries. Police are still investigating what caused him to lose control of his e-bike.
The segment of Ralph Avenue where he fell is in an industrial part of town and there are a lot of cracks in the pavement in that area. The weather was also very cold and the road might have been icy.
Less than24 hours later, on Friday, January 7th around 12:45 a.m., a man on an e-bike crashed into a parked car in the Bronx and died from his injuries. He was riding on East 149th Street when he crashed into the back of a car parked next to the curb. According to scenes from a surveillance video, the victim was riding in the middle of the street before veering to the right and hitting the car parked against the curb. EMS found him unconscious on the street. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead due to major head trauma.
