Liability For Gloucester County Garbage Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in truck accidents every year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of reasons why trucks can be dangerous.

  • Trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
  • Trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs, thereby making even a low-impact collision very dangerous.
  • Trucks have a wide turning radius, which can make side-impact collisions more likely.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Many collisions are due to drivers who make dangerous turns on the roadway. Drivers must yield the right of way to traffic traveling from the opposite direction that is close enough so as to pose a hazard. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries, including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Most car accidents involve some amount of human error. This could include instances where drivers are speeding. It is important to determine what may have caused any collision. Victims of car accidents are protected by a number of rights. The family of any person who died in a garbage truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
