Pedestrian Killed in Dix Hills Landscaping Truck Accident

93-Year-Old Woman Dies After a Reversing Landscaping Truck Strikes Her on Seneca Court in Dix Hills

Woman Died in Crown Heights Truck Collision on Eastern Parkway

DIX HILLS, NEW YORK (November 4, 2026) – A 93-year-old woman was killed in a landscaping truck accident on Seneca Court in Dix Hills.

Suffolk County officials are saying that the crash occurred around 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28. The woman was reportedly walking northbound along Seneca Court when she was hit by some type of landscaping truck that was reversing.

First responders were called to the scene of the incident to help the victim. She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip to receive treatment for critical injuries.

Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the landscaping truck was not injured and remained at the scene.

Liability for Dix Hills Truck Accidents

New York law sets clear limits on backing a vehicle. Under Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1211(a), a driver may not back up unless the movement can be made safely and without interfering with other traffic. Drivers also have a duty under § 1146 to exercise due care and use their horn to avoid colliding with any pedestrian that they encounter. This duty does not go away even if a pedestrian is outside of a marked crosswalk. Any case involving a motor vehicle backing up will typically hinge on a couple of important issues.

  • Mirror Checks: It matters whether the driver checked their rearview mirror to determine that they had a safe path.
  • Spotters: It also matters whether the driver involved made use of a spotter to guide their vehicle.
  • Backup Alarms: Many commercial trucks will come with backup alarms. Should these alarms be broken or missing, this can create a needless hazard.
  • Employer Policies: Employers are also expected to set policies and procedures for backing up or reversing at any job site.

The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are totally preventable. This is particularly true when any truck hits a pedestrian as it is backing up. Drivers that back up are expected to check behind them. If they physically cannot see what is behind them, they must either use a spotter or exit the vehicle to check for themselves. These types of incidents are nearly always the result of drivers that are in a rush to get someplace. The family of any person killed due to the negligent actions of a truck driver backing up may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
