Pedestrian Killed In Bronx Hit-and-Run Tow Truck Accident

New York Police Department Searches For Tow Truck Driver Involved In Fatal Bronx Hit-And-Run Collision

Pedestrian Killed In Bronx Hit-and-Run Tow Truck Accident

BRONX, NEW YORK (September 24, 2024) – A 64-year-old man has tragically died in a Bronx hit-and-run tow truck accident by Bronxwood Avenue and 230th Street.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 12:39 p.m. on Monday. A pedestrian was crossing eastbound on East 229th Street when he was struck by a tow truck.

The tow truck driver initially stopped at the scene but left shortly thereafter. Bystanders began performing CPR and paramedics were called to the scene.

Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian later died due to their injuries. The NYPD is still searching for the tow truck driver involved in the crash.

Liability For Bronx Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year due to the negligent actions of drivers. According to National Public Radio, “more than 7,500 pedestrians were killed by drivers last year — the highest number since 1981. The final tally may be even greater given that Oklahoma was unable to provide data due to a technical issue.” Several factors could contribute to pedestrian accidents.

  • A large portion of fatal pedestrian collisions involve drivers who are speeding.
  • Many pedestrian collisions involve drivers who are intoxicated.
  • Pedestrian collisions are more likely when drivers are making turns.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians. Drivers must slow down and yield the right of way to pedestrians close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a civil claim. Several steps should be taken after any hit-and-run accident.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Fragments of the fleeing vehicle should be collected.

If a tow truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. The family of any person killed in a collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
