New York Police Department Investigating Fatal Bronx Hit-And-run Collision on the Cross Bronx Expressway
BRONX, NEW YORK (June 13, 2024) – A motorcyclist has tragically died in a Bronx hit-and-run car accident on the Cross Bronx Expressway.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 9:06 p.m. on June 5. The Harley-Davidson rider lost control before going down on the roadway.
A semi-truck ran the motorcyclist over and then fled the scene of the collision. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
Sadly, he later died due to his injuries. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Bronx Car Accidents
Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed in semi-truck accidents every year. According to the IIHS, “There were 42,514 deaths from motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2022. This corresponds to 12.8 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.33 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The fatality rate per 100,000 people ranged from 4.8 in the District of Columbia and Rhode Island to 23.9 in Mississippi.” There are several reasons why semi-trucks can be particularly dangerous.
- Semi-trucks can weigh up to 80,000 lbs.
- Semi-trucks can take the length of two football fields to come to a stop.
- Semi-trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles and pedestrians.
Many truck accidents are due to truck drivers who are traveling too fast. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a truck driver fails to reduce their speed in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain measures are taken after any hit-and-run.
- Fragments of the fleeing vehicle should be sought.
- A police report of the accident should be created.
- If a truck driver was involved, their logbook should be reviewed if they are ever identified.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
If a truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. Generally speaking, employers are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. However, many truck companies will try to evade liability for truck accidents by hiring their drivers as “independent contractors.”
