One Driver Charged for Suffolk County Hit-and-Run Crash That Injured Jogger

Man Killed In Bensonhurst, Brooklyn Car Accident at Bay Parkway

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK (May 30, 2026) – A jogger was seriously injured in a Suffolk County hit-and-run car accident along Brook Street.

Suffolk County officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:44 AM on May 16. A woman was jogging when she was struck by a 2021 Mazda CX 5.

The driver of that vehicle fled the scene. The vehicle involved was seized as evidence.

The suspected driver of the Mazda has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in serious physical injury.

A full investigation remains ongoing.

Liability for Suffolk County Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more susceptible to being seriously injured or killed in the event of a crash. According to the National Safety Council, “in 2024, most pedestrian traffic deaths occurred in urban settings (83%), on the open road (75%) versus intersections (25%), and during dark conditions with or without artificial lighting (74%). The largest number of pedestrian deaths occurred on Fridays (1,095), closely followed by Saturdays (1,103).” Multiple factors could contribute to pedestrian accidents.

  • Pedestrian accidents are more likely to happen in the early morning when visibility is reduced.
  • Many pedestrian accidents involve drivers who are intoxicated.
  • Speeding remains one of the leading contributing factors in pedestrian accidents.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. When drivers flee the scene of a collision that results in bodily injury, they could also face criminal liability for their actions. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a driver may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a personal injury claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
