Liability for Center Moriches Parking Lot Accidents
Parking lots can be particularly dangerous and are the site of many accidents each year. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “Insurance claims data from AAA found that 29% of all 2016 vehicle collisions took place in parking lots. Of those incidents, 91% were backing collisions.” Several factors could contribute to any car accident in a parking lot.
- Parking lots are open spaces, and both vehicles and pedestrians can appear from any direction.
- Many drivers travel too fast when traveling through parking lots.
- Parking lots are often poorly illuminated, which can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians.
Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid hitting any pedestrian on the roadway. They should be particularly cautious when traveling through any parking lot. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting any pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident is able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
