Iron Worker Crushed to Death By Steel Beams at Barclay’s Center

The New York Scaffold Law, a special provision carved out under the state’s Labor Laws, provides injured workers and the family members of deceased workers, a legal avenue to obtain compensation from negligent property owners and contractors. construction worker on a scaffold, symbolfoto for building, cons

The New York Scaffold Law has been a debated topic for New York lawmakers. While big business lobbyists have argued that the law costs too much, each request has fallen upon deaf ears – and for good reason. Lawmakers have declined to weaken this law because it is still needed for the numerous construction workers who risk their lives every day at inherently dangerous construction sites.

Yet Another Accident To Prove the Need for the NY Scaffold Law

The devastating accident of a construction worker who was installing a “green roof” on top of the Barclays Center is yet another reminder of the dangers construction workers face while working at constructions sites.

Hardhat Peter Zepf, a 52-year-old iron worker, was helping to move the massive beams from a truck onto a hoist when several pieces fell on top of him. According to a fellow construction worker, the load was top heavy and when the truck driver unhooked it without instruction, the pieces toppled on top of the victim.

Emergency medical responders responded to the accident and rushed Zepf to Brooklyn Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead. While authorities are still investigating the accident, this tragic accident could have most likely been avoided. This is exactly why the Scaffold Law is still needed – to provide compensation for construction workers who get injured due to the negligent acts of contractors or property owners.
