One Person Killed in Manhattan Truck Accident on the George Washington Bridge

NYPD Investigating Fatal Tractor-Trailer Collision on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway at the George Washington Bridge

East Greenbush Semi-Truck Accident

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (October 24, 2026) – A motorcyclist has tragically died in a tractor-trailer truck accident on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway at the George Washington Bridge.

New York City officials are saying that the collision happened around 5:19 AM on the upper level of the Expressway. A motorcyclist was heading through when they were reportedly hit by the truck.

First responders were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver involved was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with police.

Liability for Manhattan Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are held to a very high standard in terms of safety. New York law requires that they maintain their vehicles safely within a single lane and leave adequate space between other vehicles. Under Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1128(a), “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Truck drivers should take a number of actions to prevent collisions.

  • Slowing Down:Truck drivers should slow down when they’re approaching heavy traffic.
  • Hazard Scanning:Truck drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
  • Following Distance:Truck drivers should maintain an adequate following distance with all vehicles ahead of them.
  • Rest Breaks:Truck drivers should take periodic rest breaks as required by law.

When a truck driver acts negligently and hits another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There could be several layers of liability for any accident involving a commercial truck. For example, the company that owned the truck could potentially be legally responsible. A truck carrier may also be responsible if the transportation company that they chose to work with had a history of safety violations. The family of any person killed in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
