Suffolk County Police Investigating Major Pedestrian Crash in Middle Island at 5 Church Avenue
MIDDLE ISLAND, SUFFOLK COUNTY (October 18, 2026) – A pedestrian was seriously injured in a Middle Island car accident on Church Avenue.
Suffolk County officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:49 PM on October 14. A 75-year-old pedestrian was reportedly crossing the road when they were hit by a vehicle.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. That person was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with major injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured at the time of the crash. The vehicle was impounded as authorities continued to investigate.
Liability for Suffolk County Car Accidents
Drivers have a legal obligation to use care to avoid colliding with pedestrians and cyclists. This necessitates that they maintain a safe speed at all times. According to NY Veh & Traf L § 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” Drivers should take a number of different actions to avoid hitting pedestrians.
- Proper Lookout:Drivers must maintain a proper lookout at all times for pedestrians.
- Horn Use:Drivers should use their horns to alert pedestrians of their presence.
- Right-of-Way:Drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians that are close enough to be a hazard.
- Reduced Visibility:Drivers should slow down during periods of reduced visibility.
When a driver does not slow down to avoid hitting any pedestrian in the roadway, they could be held legally responsible through a civil claim. Consider, for example, Barbieri v. Vokoun, 72 A.D.3d 853 (2010). That case involved a 77-year-old woman who was struck by a left-turning vehicle as she was pushing a shopping cart. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the driver did not exercise due care to avoid the collision.
