Six Injured In Queens Apartment Fire on Madison Street

QUEENS, NEW YORK (February 28, 2026)—At least six people were injured in a Queens apartment fire and a property on Madison Street.

New York City officials are saying that the incident took place around 3:30 AM by Seneca Avenue and Onderdonk Avenue in Ridgewood. Firefighters got reports of a fire at the property and came as quickly as they could.

Multiple people had to be extricated from the building. Six people were injured in the fire. This includes one firefighter who was struck in the head by a falling air-conditioning unit.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Queens Apartment Fires

Many people are seriously injured or killed in apartment fires across New York City and the United States each year. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2019–2023, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated average of 14,830 reported structure fires in high-rise buildings each year.” There are many different causes of apartment fires.

  • Cooking accidents
  • Gas explosions
  • Lithium-ion battery explosions
  • Arson

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. They must abide by all building and fire codes. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their property, they must act. Failing to act to protect residents could form the basis of a negligence claim.
