BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (February 1, 2026) – A pedestrian was seriously injured in an East New York, Brooklyn car accident near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Hegeman Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 9:42 AM on Thursday. A driver was heading down the roadway when they allowed their vehicle to veer onto a sidewalk and collide with a pedestrian near a lamp post.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. They appeared to be unresponsive on the sidewalk before being taken to the hospital.

Authorities believe that the driver responsible for the crash was a 15-year-old who has since been placed in custody. A full investigation remains ongoing.

Liability for New York City Pedestrian Accidents

All drivers in New York have a legal obligation to operate their vehicles with the care necessary to avoid colliding with the pedestrian on the roadway. According to NY Veh & Traf L § 1146, “Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law to the contrary, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Certain steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible.
  • Any witness of the crash should be interviewed.
  • Traffic footage that may have captured the accident should be sought.
  • Victims should contact an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could be construed as negligence. Even if a pedestrian is outside of a crosswalk, drivers must still use caution to avoid hitting them. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that allows their vehicle to enter into opposing lanes of traffic or any sidewalk. Any person injured in a pedestrian accident may be able to seek some measure of support through a personal injury claim.
