Liability For Long Island Bus Accidents
A number of collisions have involved MTA buses. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Several factors may contribute to pedestrian accidents.
- Buses have large blind spots that may obscure the presence of pedestrians.
- Buses weigh much more than passenger vehicles and take much longer to stop.
- Buses have a much wider turning radius than other vehicles.
Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Bus drivers must exercise a great deal of care in order to avoid injuring their passengers or other people on the roadway. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a civil claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
Bus accidents are often highly preventable. They often involve one or more drivers who are speeding. Sadly, though, bus companies will often do everything in their power to deny liability when they injure someone. Any person injured in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
