Long Island Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Accident Along Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore

Elderly Woman Died In East Flatbush Pedestrian Accident

BAY SHORE, NEW YORK (February 13, 2026)—A pedestrian has tragically died in a car accident on the Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore.

Long Island police officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:20 AM on Friday. A pedestrian was attempting to cross the roadway when they were struck by a vehicle.

First responders were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian died due to their injuries.

One man has since been arrested in connection with a deadly crash.

Liability for Long Island Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are seriously injured or killed every year in collisions across New York and the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “in 2023, most pedestrian traffic deaths occurred in urban settings (83%), on the open road (76%) versus intersections (24%), and during dark conditions with or without artificial lighting (74%). The largest number of pedestrian deaths occurs on Fridays (1,155), closely followed by Saturdays (1,150).”Several different factors could contribute to a pedestrian accident.

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Drivers are supposed to take into consideration that pedestrians may act in unpredictable ways. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident may be able to pursue some measure of transparency and accountability with a wrongful death claim.
