Bicyclist Injured in New York City Bus Accident on West Side Highway

Bicyclist Critically Injured by Bus Turning Northbound from West 41st Streetbicycle accident

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (May 26, 2026) – A bicyclist was critically injured in a Manhattan bus accident along the W. Side Highway at West 41st Street.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 4:55 AM on Friday. A 23-year-old bicyclist was riding a bike northbound that was struck by a NY Waterways bus and was turning southbound.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the bus remained at the scene and cooperated with police. A full investigation of the cause of the Manhattan Citi Bike accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Manhattan Bicycle Accidents

Bus operators are considered common carriers. They must operate with a great deal of caution to avoid hitting pedestrians or vehicles. According to New York Vehicle Code 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Bus drivers should take several actions to avoid collisions.

  • Bus drivers should check their blind spots before turning at an intersection.
  • Bus drivers should be well rested before heading out on the road.
  • Bus drivers should use their horns to alert pedestrians and other drivers of their presence.
  • Bus drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for pedestrians and other hazards.

If a bus driver turns into the path of a cyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to vehicles and cyclists that are approaching and close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a bus driver is negligent and hits a pedestrian, their employer could also be held at fault. As a general rule, employers in New York are legally responsible for the negligent conduct of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
