8 Injured In Bronx MTA Bus Accident on East 162rd Street

THE BRONX, NEW YORK (December 16, 2025) – At least eight people were injured in the Bronx following an MTA bus accident on E. 163rd Street by Trinity Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 1:58 p.m. on Monday. An MTA bus was traveling west on E. 163rd Street, and the driver lost control after hitting the emergency brakes.

It remains unclear why the bus driver hit the emergency brake. The bus proceeded to collide with several vehicles prior to coming to a stop.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims. In total, eight people were injured in the crash.

A full investigation into the bus accident remains ongoing.

Liability for New York City MTA Bus Accidents

Accidents involving MTA buses remain a common occurrence in New York City. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” There are many common causes of bus accidents.

  • Bus drivers may travel at a speed that is unsafe given the prevailing road conditions.
  • Bus drivers may fail to check their blind spots as they’re making turns.
  • Bus drivers may fail to adequately scan the road ahead of them for hazards.

Bus drivers are considered common carriers. They are expected to operate with a great deal of caution to avoid collisions. They must also maintain a safe following distance with any vehicles ahead of them. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle, this may be construed as negligence. The victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

It can be difficult to know where to begin after any bus accident. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. Any person injured in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
