Liability for New Jersey Car Accidents
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in vehicle fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “[Vehicle] fires caused an estimated annual 643 civilian deaths (17 percent of all fire incident civilian deaths); 1,532 civilian injuries (10 percent of all fire incident civilian injuries); and $2.8 billion in direct property damage (15 percent of all fire incident property damages).” There are a number of common causes of vehicle fires.
- Fuel system leaks
- Engines overheating
- Electrical system failures
- Overheated catalytic converters
- Collisions and accidents
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any car accident. For example, the company that manufactured a car could be held liable for an accident. Many cars have defects that could potentially contribute to a car fire. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any vehicle fire.
- A police report should be created.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- Medical records should be collected.
It can be hard to know where to begin after a vehicle fire. Victims are often left seriously injured. Many of these incidents result in deaths. It is important that victims of vehicle fires understand that they have legal rights. In particular, the family of any person who died in a vehicle fire may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
