BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN (January 17, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a hit-and-run car accident in Brownsville by the intersection of Pitkin Avenue and Osborn Street.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday morning. A pedestrian was found motionless in the street after being hit by a vehicle. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.

The female pedestrian was taken to the hospital to receive treatment. Despite life-saving measures, she died due to the severe nature of her injuries.

Liability for Brooklyn Hit-And-Run Car Accidents

Far too many people are seriously injured or killed every year in hit-and-run car accidents. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit- and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” There are several common causes of pedestrian accidents.

  • Drivers may be traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions.
  • Drivers may fail to scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
  • Drivers may be intoxicated by one or more substances.
  • Drivers may operate their vehicle while fatigued.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. They must use their horn when necessary to alert pedestrians of their presence. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, this could be construed as negligence. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a personal injury claim.
