Three Killed, Four Hospitalized After Bay Ridge Car Accident

New York City Police Investigating Deadly Collision by Belt Parkway and 65th Street

motor vehicle crashes

BAY RIDGE, NEW YORK (August 26, 2026) – Three people were killed and four were hospitalized in a Bay Ridge car accident on the Belt Parkway by 65th Street.

New York City officials are saying that the collision occurred around 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday. A Cadillac was speeding eastbound when it collided with a slower-moving vehicle.

That Cadillac was subsequently rear-ended by another vehicle. The force of the impact caused the Cadillac to spin and hit a guardrail.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims. Sadly, three teens were killed in the collision.

Four people were taken to the hospital. A full investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

Liability for Bay Ridge Car Accidents

New York drivers have a legal obligation to take reasonable precautions to avoid car accidents. Pursuant to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1180(a), “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” There are many other factors aside from speeding, but investigators will look at and evaluate liability for a traffic collision.

  • It matters whether or not a driver maintained a safe following distance with the vehicles ahead of them.
  • Another point of consideration is whether a driver was paying attention to the road or potentially distracted by their phone.
  • The condition of all vehicles involved can become relevant as well. Drivers are more likely to lose control of their vehicle if tires or other key components are not properly maintained.
  • The road conditions that a driver faced are particularly relevant. Even traveling the speed limit could potentially be dangerous, depending on the prevailing conditions.

There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle from behind. Consider, for example, Grecco v. Altice USA, Inc., 230 A.D.3d 655. In that case, the victim was a rear-seat passenger in a vehicle that stopped to yield for an ambulance before that vehicle was rear-ended. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the rear driver was negligent for failing to slow down as required.
