Six Injured in Heat Suppression System Accident at Mobil Gas Station in Medford

Chemical Exposure Accident at Medford Mobil Gas Station Left Six People Hospitalized

Lungs

MEDFORD, NEW YORK (July 6, 2026) – At least six people were injured in a chemical exposure accident at the Medford Mobil gas station along Route 112.

Medford police officials are saying that the incident occurred around 9:30 AM on Friday. Apparently, there was some type of malfunction with the heat suppression system for one of the gas pumps. This resulted in the equipment triggering its automatic cooldown system.

Some type of white powder was sprayed to cool the equipment. This powder fell into cars and onto nearby customers. Paramedics were called to the scene to help all of the victims.

A total of six individuals reportedly had trouble breathing and were experiencing eye irritation. A full investigation into the incident at the Medford Mobil gas station remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Medford Gas Station Accidents

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. Among other things, this includes a duty to maintain fuel pumps and other essential systems. When property owners fail to maintain fuel pumps and other essential systems, this can create a foreseeable risk of harm. There are several factors that may have contributed to any piece of gas station equipment malfunctioning.

  • The equipment at a gas station may have defective heat systems that wrongly detected a fire requiring suppression.
  • The sensors on gas pumps or other systems may have been improperly calibrated.
  • Gas station equipment might not have undergone routine inspections that would’ve revealed serious issues.
  • The equipment at a gas station may have become worn out over time due to weather exposure or direct sunlight.

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be several liable parties for any accident at a gas station. The property owner could bear responsibility if they had actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition and failed to act. It is also possible that the manufacturer of a piece of equipment at the gas station could be legally responsible through a product liability claim. Product manufacturers have a legal obligation to ensure their products are reasonably safe.

Steps to Take After Chemical Exposure Accidents

Exposure to noxious chemicals can cause numerous adverse health effects. These incidents should be taken seriously. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “In 2017, 41 U.S. workers died on the job after a single episode of inhaling chemicals and chemical products—7 more fatal injuries than in 2016. This number ranged between 33 and 55 fatal injuries each year from 2011 to 2017, with a total of 297 fatalities across the 7-year span.” Multiple steps should be taken after any chemical exposure accident.

  • Victims should seek a thorough medical evaluation as early as possible.
  • All medical records related to treatment should be collected and preserved.
  • Surveillance footage that may have captured the incident should be carefully reviewed.
  • All maintenance records for the defective equipment involved should be scrutinized.
  • Victims should carefully consider their legal options with a team experienced in personal injury claims.

It may not always be obvious what the long-term health effects are after any chemical exposure incident. Some victims may develop prolonged respiratory issues. There is also the possibility that a person could sustain neurological damage. The victims of these incidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability and justice through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
