Liability For Queens School Bus Collisions
Buses tend to be very safe for passengers. However, these vehicles can be quite dangerous for pedestrians and those in smaller vehicles. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Several factors may contribute to bus collisions.
- Buses have large blind spots that may obscure the presence of other vehicles.
- Buses have a high center of gravity, which makes them more vulnerable to rollover collisions.
- Buses weigh much more than passenger vehicles and take substantially longer to stop.
Bus drivers must exercise a great deal of caution in order to avoid collisions. This requires that bus drivers maintain their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. Depending on the prevailing conditions of the roadway, a bus driver may need to operate their vehicle substantially below the speed limit. If a bus driver fails to exercise due care in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that accident victims take certain steps in order to preserve their rights after a collision.
- The police report for the collision should be reviewed.
- Medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- An experienced bus accident attorney should be contacted.
Bus accidents can be very traumatic for all involved. Victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for many days or even weeks. It is common for victims to be left with high medical bills. Injuries can be particularly disruptive for children who may need to take time away from school. Any person injured in a school bus collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
