Two People Seriously Injured After School Bus Crashed Through Fence in Brooklyn Neighborhood by Bedford Avenue and Farragut Road
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (April 11, 2025) – A 43-year-old mother and her eight-year-old son were seriously injured in a Brooklyn school bus accident near the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Farragut Road.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:30 AM on Wednesday morning. The school bus did not have any children on it as it partially went onto a sidewalk and crashed through a fence.
Two of the people hit were identified as a mother and her young child. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims.
They were taken to Maimonides Medical Center with major injuries. There is speculation that the school bus driver may have hit the gas instead of the brakes as they were trying to avoid another vehicle.
A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
Liability for Brooklyn School Bus Accidents
School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation for children. But these same buses can be very dangerous for pedestrians. According to the National Safety Council, “From 2013 to 2022, about 71% of the deaths in school bus-related crashes were occupants of vehicles other than the school bus, and 16% were pedestrians. About 5% were school bus passengers, 4% were school bus drivers, and 3% were pedalcyclists.” School bus drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.
- Awareness: School bus drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
- Left Turns: School bus drivers should be particularly cautious when they are making left turns.
- Maintenance: School bus drivers should ensure that their vehicles are adequately maintained.
School bus drivers are considered common carriers. They must operate with an abundance of caution in order to avoid causing accidents. If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
The vast majority of school bus accidents are preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. It is also possible that a school bus accident is caused by pedal confusion. This occurs when a driver mistakes the brakes for the accelerator. Any person injured in a school bus accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim.
