58 People Sickened in South Fork, Long Island Salmonella Outbreak

Salmonella Outbreak That Injured 58 People Linked to Private Community Event During Palm Tree Music Festival

Two People Injured In Staten Island Garbage Truck Accident

SOUTH FORK, LONG ISLAND (July 13, 2026) – At least 58 people have been sickened in a South Fork, Long Island Salmonella outbreak that has been connected to a private community event.

Long Island officials are saying that the first illnesses were identified on July 2. Authorities believe that the source of the outbreak was from food left over at the Palm Tree Music Festival.

All of the patients were reportedly treated at the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Salmonella is a type of bacterial infection that is usually contracted through eating undercooked food.

However, it is possibly that the infection can be passed from person to person.

Liability for Long Island Salmonella Outbreaks

Business owners and municipal entities in New York have a legal obligation to protect against reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. They owe a duty of care to all people on their premises, whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. This duty extends to protect against foodborne illnesses and infectious diseases. What follows are some of the measures that can be taken to prevent Salmonella outbreaks.

  • Businesses should develop a safety plan.
  • Businesses should only purchase food from approved and licensed suppliers.
  • Businesses should prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw poultry and seafood away from any type of ready-to-eat food.
  • Businesses should cook all of their food to verified safe temperatures.

If a business owner fails to take reasonable measures to prevent foodborne illnesses, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Business owners are expected to observe best practices and can be held accountable when they fail to abide by food safety standards. For the most part, Salmonella outbreaks are entirely preventable and nearly always the result of some type of negligence.

Steps to Take After Becoming Ill From a Salmonella Outbreak

How many people are sickened in Salmonella outbreaks every year in the United States? According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Salmonella is responsible for 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year.” Several steps should be taken after any Salmonella outbreak.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible.
  • The source of the contamination should be determined.
  • All medical records related to treatment should be preserved.
  • Victims should discuss their legal options with a team experienced in personal injury claims.

It could be difficult to know where to begin after contracting Salmonella. Many victims can face very serious long-term health complications as a result of their illness. Unfortunately, businesses will almost never accept responsibility when they cause any type of outbreak. It is important that victims understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
