New York Police Department Investigating Bronx Hit-And-Run Collision Along Melrose Avenue
THE BRONX, NEW YORK (January 26, 2024) – A female pedestrian has tragically died in a Bronx pedestrian accident by Melrose Avenue and 157th Street.
New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday. A woman was walking just outside of her apartment when she was hit by a vehicle.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. The driver of the Jeep Wrangler involved fled the scene.
Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian died due to their injuries. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Bronx Pedestrian Accidents
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in hit-and-run accidents. According to the AAA Foundation, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit-and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” There are a number of steps that should be taken after any hit-and-run collision.
- Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- Fragments of the fleeing vehicle should be sought.
Drivers that flee the scene of collisions may face criminal as well as civil liability for their actions. Sadly, though, many hit-and-run drivers are never caught. This is why it is so important that evidence is properly preserved. Even a fragment of a fleeing vehicle can help potentially determine which car was involved in the crash. The family of any person that died in a pedestrian accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
