Two Killed, Five Injured Injured In Highland Mills Car Accident on State Route 32

HIGHLAND MILLS, NEW YORK (November 16, 2022) – Two people were killed and five people were injured in a Highland Mills truck accident with a van on State Route 32.

Highland Mills officials are saying that the collision took place on Wednesday, November 9. A box truck and a Ford Econoline van were involved in a collision under uncertain conditions.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims. The driver of the box truck and the driver of the van both died due to their injuries.

Five other people inside of the van were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Highland Mills Car Accidents

Nearly 4,000 people are killed every year in accidents with commercial trucks, according to the FMCSA. Events that could contribute to a truck accident may take place hours, weeks or months prior to a crash. They include fatigue, alcohol and speeding. Handling a truck is substantially different from driving a passenger vehicle. There are a number of steps that truck drivers should take to avoid collisions.

  • Truck drivers should be well rested before the start of their shift.
  • Truck drivers should abstain from alcohol and drugs.
  • Truck drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. This includes obeying all speed limits and traffic regulations. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall operate a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to reduce their speed and hits a scooter rider, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Depending on the facts of any case, the company that operated a commercial truck or van could be liable for a collision. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. The family of any person that is killed in a car accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
