Cleanup Expected At Bethpage Community Park After Chemical Drums Found

Officials With The Town of Oyster Bay Say Cleanup of Bethpage Community Park Not Happening Fast Enough

Cleanup Expected At Bethpage Community Park After Chemical Drums Found

BETHPAGE, NEW YORK (April 24, 2024) – The New York Department of Environmental Conservation said that it is going to clean up the hazardous waste left behind at Bethpage Community Park.

The announcement comes after six drums filled with chemicals were found buried in the soil. Officials said that the discovery of chemicals was first made as officials were cleaning up the old Grumman site.

Bethpage Community Park has served as a dumping area for Northrop Grumman Aerospace. Northrop Grumman is a global aerospace, defense, and security company.

It regularly contracts with the United States government, in particular the Department of Defense. Officials for the Town of Oyster Bay have called Bethpage Community Park a graveyard for chemical drums.

They have said that the cleanup of the area is not happening fast enough. The discovery of the chemical drums comes at a time when several lawsuits have been filed.

Plaintiffs have alleged that their illnesses were caused in part by the toxic chemicals that have been dumped in and around Bethpage Community Park.

Liability For New York Chemical Spills

Bethpage Community Park has a long history of being a dumping ground for dangerous chemicals. According to the NY Department of Environmental Conservation, “Prior to the site’s donation to the Town of Oyster Bay in 1962, portions of the present-day Bethpage Community Park were operated by Grumman as a series of settling ponds and sludge drying beds. The historic use as settling ponds/drying beds resulted in both soil and groundwater contamination that is currently being addressed in accordance with a Record of Decision with DEC.” There are a number of chemicals that have been discovered at the site.

  • Waste petroleum
  • Chlorinated solvents
  • Trichloroethylene
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

All companies that do business in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for the protection of everyone on a property whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. Companies cannot simply dump chemicals wherever they please, even if that area is abandoned or controlled by them. There are strict regulations for hazardous waste management set forth in 6 NYCRR Parts 370, 371, 372, 373, 374, and 376. If a company improperly disposes of chemicals, which then hurt local residents, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of illnesses associated with exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • Adult leukemia
  • Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Parkinson’s disease

Illnesses related to hazardous waste materials often don’t present right away. In many cases, those affected may develop cancer or other ailments decades after being exposed. This is why it is so important to understand any potential connection between an illness and illegal chemical dumping. Companies like Northrop Grumman have demonstrated time and time again that they will do everything in their power to deny responsibility when people are injured by their activities. If you or someone that you love has been impacted by the hazardous waste material dumped at Bethpage Community Park, you may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
