Liability In New Jersey Transit Bus Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in bus accidents. Bus passengers tend to be the most protected and account for the smallest number of serious injuries. However, accidents involving road hazards or rollover collisions can be absolutely catastrophic for bus passengers. This is especially true during the winter months when there is ice on the road. There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a bus collision including:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Dangerous turns
  • Prescription drug use

Bus drivers must get a commercial driver’s license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must operate their vehicle with due care to avoid collisions. This includes driving according to the prevailing conditions of the roadway. When there is potentially ice on the road drivers must slow down. Failing to slow down during icy conditions could create the basis for a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Head trauma
  • PTSD

Any person that is seriously injured in a New Jersey bus accident may be able to seek damages through a bodily injury claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
