A security guard was fatally struck and another worker was seriously injured in a construction site accident in New York when a large panel of glass fell. The FDNY responded to calls for a construction related accident at 217 West 57th St. just after 10:30 a.m. on May 23rd.
Upon arriving at the scene, the paramedics observed that a large glass panel had fallen on Harry Ramnauth, a 67-year-old, security guard at the Central Park Tower Construction site. He was later pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital. The 8 by 14-foot piece of glass weighed several thousand pounds and was being installed on the first floor of the Central Park Tower building. It fell on the security guard as construction workers were in the process of moving it.
Another 27-year-old construction worker who was attempting to help the security guard also suffered serious injuries. Paramedics found him with severe body trauma, unresponsive and unconscious. The worker was rushed to the hospital but he could not be saved.
Construction has come to a halt at the site as the Department of Building and Safety investigates the exact cause of the accident. A violation for failing to safeguard the site was also issued to Extell and Bovis Lend Lease, which oversees the project at the Central Park Tower Construction site.
More Accidents Continue To Prove the Need for Safer Construction Site Procedures
The number of construction site injuries and fatalities has continued to rise in New York City during the past few years, according to an annual report by the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health, an advocacy group. These shocking numbers prove that we need tougher licensing requirements for contractors, frequent safety inspections, and robust worker training. This may not get rid of all construction site accidents, but it will reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities.
