A 61-year-old woman was critically injured after being hit by an MTA bus in New York City on March 6, 2017, around 9 p.m. The victim was crossing E. Houston Street at Avenue D in the crosswalk at a green light when she was struck by the MTA bus. She was transported to a local hospital. She suffered serious injuries, including a broken sternum, ribs, hip and pelvis. She also suffered internal bleeding.
The bus driver was also transported to the hospital for trauma. The police charged him with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
This is not the first accident involving a pedestrian hit by an MTA bus at this location. In October 2016, an MTA bus that was turning left from Avenue D onto East Houston fatally hit 73-year-old Anna Colon. The facts of these two accidents are nearly identical.
What To Do After a Bus Accident
Buses have numerous occupants in them and are much larger than an average passenger vehicle – and even larger than a pedestrian. As such, the likelihood of injuries is greatly increased in accidents involving buses.
It is easy to become confused, frustrated and overwhelmed when you are involved in a bus accident, whether as a passenger or another motorist. This is why it is important to hire an experienced NYC bus accident attorney to help you protect your legal rights. In addition to reaching out to a personal injury attorney, you should also do the following:
– Seek immediate medical care. If your injuries are severe enough, you will be transported to the emergency room. If not, you should still seek immediate medical attention. This is important because symptoms of certain medical conditions may not surface until days or weeks after the accident.
– Get information. If you don’t need emergency medical care, you should take the time to gather information at the scene of the accident. You should take pictures of the scene and get the information of the bus and the driver. You should also get the contact information for any witnesses to the accident.
– Keep a record of your injuries and damages. It is important to keep a record of your injuries and any damages related to the accident. You should provide this information to your New York City bus accident lawyer.
Most NYC buses are operated through the State or City of New York. If you are involved in an accident with a State or City-operated bus, you must file a Notice of Claim within 90 days of the accident. Therefore, it is important that you immediately contact an NYC bus accident attorney.
