Pedestrian Killed In Long Island Car Accident on Sunrise Highway

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK (February 11, 2025) – A 60-year-old male pedestrian has tragically died in an Oakdale, Long Island car accident on the eastbound Sunrise Highway.

Long Island police officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:30 PM on Friday night. A pedestrian was crossing in the roadway when they were hit by a BMW 550.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are asking anyone that may have witnessed the collision to reach out to them. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for New York Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in car accidents. According to the IIHS, “Deaths from motor vehicle crashes with pedestrians have increased 83% since reaching their low point in 2009 and account for 18% of crash fatalities. The rates of pedestrian crash deaths per 100,000 people are highest for people ages 20 and over.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a pedestrian accident.

  • Pedestrian accidents are more likely during early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
  • Pedestrian accidents are more likely if drivers are speeding.
  • Pedestrian accidents are more likely if drivers are distracted by their phones or other objects.

All drivers have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. When a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a civil claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Organ damage
  • PTSD

The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable. They often occur due to drivers making unsafe left turns. It is easy for a driver to be distracted by oncoming traffic and to not notice a pedestrian attempting to cross the roadway. Any person who is injured in a pedestrian accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim.
