Pedestrian Killed In Arcade Semi-Truck Accident on North Street

ARCADE, NEW YORK (January 25, 2022) – A 31-year-old male pedestrian has tragically died in an Arcade semi-truck accident while crossing North Street.

Wyoming County officials are saying that the collision took place around 2:00 p.m. on Monday. A 31-year-old pedestrian was crossing the street when they were hit by a semi-truck.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Arcade Semi-Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in semi-truck accidents every year. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), over 4,000 people were killed in semi-truck accidents in 2020 alone. Semi-trucks can weigh 20 – 30 times more than passenger vehicles and can therefore be particularly dangerous. There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a semi-truck accident.

  • Semi-truck accidents are more likely to happen at night when visibility is reduced.
  • Semi-truck accidents are more likely to happen in urban areas with many intersections.
  • Semi-truck accidents are more likely to involve younger truck drivers with less experience.

Semi-truck drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety and must do everything in their power to avoid collisions. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals in the roadway. If a semi-truck driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any semi-truck accident.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any pedestrian accident. Truck companies are quick to blame pedestrians for collisions even when their own drivers acted negligently. The family of any person that is killed in a semi-truck accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that come with the sudden loss of a loved one.
