Pedestrian, Cyclist Killed in Chinatown Car Accident by the Manhattan Bridge

Driver Faces Murder Charges After Deadly Chinatown Collision That Killed Two People

Pedestrian, Cyclist Killed in Chinatown Car Accident by the Manhattan Bridge

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (July 26, 2025) – A pedestrian and cyclist have tragically died in a Chinatown, Manhattan, car accident near the Manhattan Bridge.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:30 am. A driver was allegedly in a stolen blue Chevrolet that was speeding by Canal Street and Bowery.

That vehicle jumped the curb before striking a pedestrian and cyclist. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim.

Sadly, both victims later died due to the severe nature of their injuries. A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for New York City Pedestrian Accidents

Speeding remains one of the most common causes of car accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “Speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2023, killing 11,775, or an average of over 32 people on a typical day. The total number of fatal motor-vehicle crashes attributable to speeding was 10,541.” City officials can take several measures to help prevent pedestrian accidents.

  • City officials should heavily enforce traffic infractions that are likely to lead to pedestrian accidents.
  • City officials can study which roadways and intersections tend to have the most accidents.
  • City officials should incorporate infrastructure like pedestrian refuge islands.

All drivers owe pedestrians a duty of care to avoid colliding with them. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Surveillance footage of the incident should be sought.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • A thorough investigation into the incident should be conducted.

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous liable parties. For example, the company that built a vehicle may bear some liability if an accident was caused by a vehicle system failure. Sadly, drivers and their insurance providers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility following any collision. This is why it is so important that accident victims seek the guidance of experienced legal counsel.
