One Person Killed In Long Island Fire Truck Accident

Fire Truck Involved in Fatal Collision at Busy Medford Intersection Along Route 112

One Person Killed In Long Island Fire Truck Accident

MEDFORD, NEW YORK (April 7, 2025) – One person has tragically died in a Medford car accident involving a firetruck on Route 112 just south of the Long Island Expressway.

Long Island officials are saying that the accident took place on Thursday. A sedan was impaled by the front bumper of a fire truck.

The force of the impact pushed the smaller vehicle a considerable distance. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim.

Sadly, a 39-year-old man died due to the severe nature of his injuries. It remains unclear if the fire truck was responding to an emergency at the time of the collision.

A full investigation remains ongoing.

Liability for Medford Fire Truck Accidents

Many people are killed or seriously injured every year in accidents involving emergency vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 224 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. Half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (50%).” Pedestrians and those passenger vehicles tend to be the most at risk. There are many steps that emergency drivers should take to avoid collisions.

  • Emergency drivers should use their lights and sirens to alert others of their presence.
  • Emergency drivers should slow down before proceeding through intersections.
  • Emergency drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Depending on the facts of any case, a police or fire department could be liable for a collision involving one of their vehicles. Generally speaking, emergency drivers have a great deal of immunity from civil liability for crashes. But liability may apply if these drivers operate with a reckless disregard for the safety of the public. It is important that certain steps are taken after any fatal collision.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • The actions of emergency drivers leading up to a crash should be understood.
  • An experienced wrongful death attorney should be contacted.

Accidents involving emergency vehicles are often highly preventable. Part of the problem is that these drivers don’t always follow proper protocol when responding to a crash. There have been a number of situations where emergency drivers have failed to utilize their lights and sirens. The family of any person who died in an accident with an emergency vehicle may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
