Driver Was Reportedly Asleep Before Tesla in Autopilot Mode Crashed Through Home
CHESTER, NEW YORK (September 8, 2026) – At least one person was injured in a Chester car accident after a Tesla drove through the living room window of a home on High Street.
Chester police officials are saying that the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. A Tesla was reportedly in Autopilot mode when it crashed through the window of a home.
The force of the impact threw one person from their couch and injured them in the process. Witnesses believed that the driver may have been asleep at the time of the crash.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. That person was taken to a hospital to receive treatment. A full investigation into the Tesla car accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Accidents Involving Self-Driving Cars
Every person operating a motor vehicle in New York has a legal obligation to maintain a safe speed and use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1172(a), “Except when directed to proceed by a police officer, every driver of a vehicle approaching a stop sign shall stop at a clearly marked stop line.” There are a number of different factors that could contribute to any specific car accident.
- Speed
- Distracted driving
- Inclement weather
- Poor road conditions
- Driver intoxication
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle or a fixed object, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Depending on the unique facts of any case, there could be several liable parties for a collision. This is particularly true if a self-driving vehicle was involved. The company that manufactured the vehicle or the software used to drive autonomously could face liability if that software was defective in some critical way.
