One Person Injured By Falling Debris on Cross Bronx Expressway

Chunk of Falling Debris Fell From Overpass and Injured One Person on the Cross Bronx Expressway

Male Pedestrian Critically Injured In Staten Island Car Accident

BRONX, NEW YORK (May 15, 2026)—One person was injured after being struck by falling debris from an overpass on the Cross Bronx Expressway.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:50 AM on Monday. A driver was heading down the freeway when they were hit by a chunk of debris that fell onto their vehicle.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim. They were transported to the hospital to receive treatment. All of the lower lanes on the George Washington Bridge were temporarily closed as the Port Authority was investigating.

Liability for Car Accidents on the Cross Bronx Expressway

Municipal entities in New York have a legal obligation to ensure that roadways and bridges are in a reasonably safe condition. This requires that those roadways and bridges be periodically inspected and well maintained. If a roadway or bridge has some type of defect, this must be addressed. Failing to address a dangerous condition could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of reasons that a piece of debris could potentially fall from an overpass.

  • An overpass may have been deteriorating if it was not periodically repaired.
  • Water may have been allowed to seep through the concrete of an overpass and corrode the rebar and other support structures.
  • A truck or other vehicle may have allowed improperly secured cargo to tumble into the roadway.

A large portion of car accidents involve debris. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “Results suggest that road debris was a factor in an estimated average of 50,658 police-reported crashes (95% Confidence Interval: 42,066 – 59,250) which resulted in 9,805 injuries (7,714 – 11,896) and 125 deaths (104 – 144) annually in the United States over years 2011 – 2014.” Any person injured by falling road debris may be able to seek some measure of justice through a personal injury claim.
