Liability for Long Island Truck Accidents
Commercial trucks are involved in many fatal collisions each year. These vehicles often involve a speeding driver. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” Truck drivers should take several measures to avoid collisions.
- Truck drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
- Truck drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
- Truck drivers should keep a safe following distance with vehicles ahead of them.
Truck drivers will typically need to acquire a commercial license. They are expected to operate their vehicle with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. But in far too many situations, truck drivers are pushed to complete delivery routes on unrealistic schedules. This can lead to them adopting unsafe driving habits. The family of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
