Lawsuits Filed After Exposure To Paraquat Linked To Parkinson’s Disease

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK (February 8, 2022)  – Exposure to the popular industrial herbicide Paraquat, also known as Gramoxone, has been linked to Parkinson’s Disease, prompting numerous lawsuits.

Paraquat is widely used to kill weeds, though it has been primarily used for grass control. In the United States, Paraquat is available primarily as a liquid and can only be purchased by people who have the proper license.

The drug was first produced in 1961 and is only available for commercial purposes. It is so dangerous that it has been banned in 32 countries across the world, including the European Union and China.

Recent studies by the National Institute of Health’s Environmental Health Sciences as well as the Parkinson’s Institute have shown a link between Paraquat and Parkinson’s Disease.

These studies demonstrate that people who have been exposed by Paraquat were 2.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s Disease than people who were not exposed.

There were various risk factors to develop Parkinson’s Disease for those who were exposed. This includes the amount, route, and direction of the exposure. It also includes a person’s health condition at the time of the exposure.

Despite these studies, companies like Syngenta, Growmark, and Chevron continued to manufacture and sell Paraquat – all while making hundreds of millions in profits every year.

If you’ve been exposed to Gramoxone or been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, you may have a legal claim. You can contact one of our experienced personal injury attorneys today for a risk free case evaluation 800-529-9997.

Liability In Paraquat Exposure

Even at low levels of exposure, Paraquat can be highly toxic, in addition to creating an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease. According to MidlinePlus, “Breathing in paraquat may cause lung damage and can lead to a disease called paraquat lung. paraquat causes damage to the body when it touches the lining of the mouth, stomach, or intestines. […] Paraquat may also damage the kidneys, liver, and esophagus (the tube that food goes down from your mouth to your stomach).” There are a number of ways that a person could potentially become exposed to Paraquat.

  • Licensed applicators of Paraquat are the people who are at the greatest risk of exposure.
  • Paraquat has been used in terrorist attacks and chemical warfare.
  • The most likely route of exposure to Paraquat is ingestion.
  • Paraquat poisoning is possible if the drug touches a person’s skin.
  • Paraquat can become mixed with foods and beverages.

There are a number of common symptoms for Paraquat exposure including confusion, liver failure, acute kidney failure, seizures, difficulty breathing and muscle weakness. If you suspect that you have been exposed to Paraquat, there are a number of steps that you should take. You should quickly remove any clothing that has the liquid on it. That clothing should then be securely disposed of. The Paraquat should be washed off with ample soap and water.

Companies that have manufactured Paraquat could potentially be liable if someone develops Parkinson’s Disease or become sick. Generally speaking, all corporations that develop products or drugs must make those products or drugs reasonably safe. They must also warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with the use of their products. The lawsuits thus far against Syngenta, Growmark, and Chevron primarily allege that these companies knew about the dangers of their products and failed to warn consumers. There are a number of steps that should be taken if you’ve been exposed to Paraquat.

  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Your doctor should regularly monitor you for signs of Parkinson’s Disease.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A work report should be made, if applicable.
  • a thorough independent investigation should be conducted.

Any person that is injured or develops Parkinson’s Disease after being exposed to Paraquat may have legal recourse through a civil claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, though, the manufacturers for this dangerous product will likely fight hard to deny any responsibility if someone is injured. An experience personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
