The New York construction site experienced yet another fatal accident on April 14th. According to New York City Building Commissioner, Rick Chandler, the death was completely preventable.
Around 11:00 a.m., 59-year- old Jose Cruz, the native Dominican Republic living in Sunset Park, fell 18 feet to his death at a construction site located at 1604 Broadway, near West 49th Street in Times Square, New York. He fell from an I-beam near the second floor as he was helping remove part of a steel deck from a slab. He was not wearing proper fall protection equipment, even though he was working at heights.
The Department of Buildings immediately closed the construction site after the fatal accident. The Building Commissioner said he would keep the site closed for a long time. He also expressed his disappointment and intolerance for the way contractors are continuously putting the life of workers at risk.
The contractor for this project site is Streamline USA LLC. The contractor has a history of placing its workers at great risk on its construction sites. Streamline USA was given 7 serious OSHA violations in March 2016 at the same construction site and fined $19,200. The construction site also has a number of open DOB violations and recent complaints of falling debris.
The contractor’s violations are not isolated towards only this location. In September 2016, Streamline USA has issued two serious OSHA violations on another construction site located at 58 9th Ave in the meatpacking district. The company was also hit with $17,746 in fines.
More Accidents Evidence the Need for Safer Construction Site Procedures
Construction site accidents have become too common in New York. While some accidents cannot be avoided, most can be easily prevented. The number of fatal construction accidents can significantly be reduced if contractors simply ensure workers are working with adequate safety gear.
