Investigation Underway After Two People Died in Flatbush Apartment Fire

Four Injured in Newark Gas Explosion Accident

FLATBUSH, NEW YORK (May 25, 2026) – Two people have tragically died in a Flatbush apartment fire at a property along Nostrand Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:45 a.m. on Monday. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims.

Two people were transported to local area hospitals with severe injuries. Sadly, both people later died due to their injuries.

A full investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Flatbush Apartment Fires

Many people are seriously injured or killed every year in apartment fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2019–2023, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated average of 14,830 reported structure fires in high-rise buildings each year. These fires caused an average of 33 civilian deaths, 439 civilian injuries, and $203 million in direct property damage per year.” Several different causes could contribute to an apartment fire.

  • Electrical malfunctions
  • Lit candles
  • Space heaters
  • Cooking accidents

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a safe condition. They can be liable for accidents caused by defects on their property. This can include instances where property owners fail to uphold building or safety codes. The family of any person killed in an apartment fire may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
