Two People Injured In Car Accident on the Staten Island Expressway

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (June 23, 2024) – Two people were hospitalized in a Brooklyn car accident on the Staten Island Expressway, according to the NYPD.

New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 1:15 a.m. on Friday. Multiple vehicles collided on the roadway under uncertain conditions.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Brooklyn Car Accidents

A large number of collisions involved one or more drivers who were speeding. According to the NHTSA, “For more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2022, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.

  • Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them.
  • Drivers should maintain a safe follow distance with the vehicle ahead of them.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

All drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid causing accidents. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident.

  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • A car accident attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know what to do after car accidents. A collision can leave a person seriously injured and impact their ability to go to school or work. Many people may need to give up their favorite activities, such as sports. Any person injured in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A car accident attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
