Two Pedestrians Injured In Queens Car Accident

QUEENS, NEW YORK (May 22, 2024) – Two pedestrians were seriously injured in a Queens car accident near the intersection of Steinway Street and 25th Avenue.

New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday. A red sedan was heading southbound on Steinway Street when it drove onto a sidewalk and hit two female pedestrians.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. They were taken to Elmhurst Hospital with major injuries.

The police arrested the driver of the sedan on suspicion of vehicular assault and DUI. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For New York City Pedestrian Accidents

Every year, thousands of people are seriously injured or killed in collisions with drunk drivers. According to the NHTSA, “Every day, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 45 minutes. In 2020, 11,654 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths — a 14% increase from 2019. These deaths were all preventable.” By the time any person is arrested for DUI, they have likely driven while intoxicated dozens of times. Many different substances besides alcohol could impair a driver.

  • Opioids
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine
  • Psychedelics

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. Commercial drivers are held to an even higher standard. They cannot drive with a BAC of 0.04% or higher. If a driver hits a pedestrian while under the influence of alcohol, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps be taken after any car accident.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • A personal injury attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after a car accident. Victims often suffer life-changing injuries and may need to take extensive time off of work. Many victims will never be able to return to work. Any person who is injured in a Queens DUI accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
