Liability For New York City DUI Car Accidents

Driver intoxication remains a leading cause of preventable injury and death. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 39 minutes. In 2022, 13,524 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths.” Even small amounts of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely.

  • Intoxicated drivers may experience a decline in visual function.
  • Intoxicated drivers may have a reduced ability to maintain lane position.
  • Intoxicated drivers may have difficulty maintaining their vehicle at a set speed.

It is illegal for any driver to operate their vehicle at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher. Commercial drivers are held to an even higher standard. What many drivers may not realize is that a variety of substances can intoxicate them besides alcohol. This can include prescription and over-the-counter medications. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Organ damage
  • Death

The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable. They tend to involve drivers who are distracted, intoxicated, or speeding. Sadly, though, drivers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility when they hit someone. This is why it is so important that evidence is properly preserved after any collision. A pedestrian accident attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
