Liability for Bethpage Car Accidents
Bike riders have a small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other vehicles. According to the American College of Surgeons, “More than 1.1 million electric bicycles were sold in the United States in 2022 with a projected annual growth rate of 10%. Over 20,000 people are injured while riding electric bicycles annually with approximately 3,000 individuals requiring hospitalization, and this is likely underreported.” There are multiple steps that drivers should take to avoid hitting bike riders.
-
- Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for potential hazards.
- Drivers should maintain their vehicle at a safe speed at all times.
- Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns and intersections.
- Drivers should use their horn when necessary to alert pedestrians of their presence.
Drivers must take into consideration that the behavior of pedestrians can be unpredictable at times. It is always a good idea for drivers to maintain adequate separation from pedestrians and slow down in areas that have heavy pedestrian traffic. When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any bicyclist in the roadway, they could be held at fault. Any person injured in a bicycle accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability for a civil claim.
