Six Injured in Bronx High-Rise Apartment Fire

Cause of Fire That Injured Six People at High-Rise Apartment in Crotona Park East Under Investigation by FDNY

Four Injured in Newark Gas Explosion Accident

CROTONA PARK EAST, THE BRONX (September 19, 2026) – At least six people were injured in a Bronx high-rise apartment fire at 1773 Vyse Avenue in Crotona Park.

New York City officials are saying that the incident occurred around 4:30 PM on Tuesday. Flames quickly engulfed the six-story building as firefighters rushed to the scene.

Multiple units arrived and began working towards putting the fire out. In total, six people required hospitalization after the fire.

At least one of those victims was a woman who sustained serious injuries. A full investigation of the cause of the fire remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Bronx Apartment Fires

Property owners in New York City have a legal obligation to maintain their dwellings in a reasonably safe condition. Pursuant to New York City Housing Maintenance Code § 27-2005, apartment owners are responsible for keeping their units in good repair and complying with all fire and safety codes. This necessitates that these units have functional smoke detectors and that there are fire extinguishers scattered throughout the building. There are many potential causes of apartment fires in New York City.

  • A number of fires are caused by defective lithium-ion batteries.
  • Unattended cooking remains one of the leading causes of residential fires across New York and the United States.
  • Gas leaks are another major concern that could potentially cause an explosion and fire.
  • During the winter months, space heaters could cause a fire if they are left near blankets or other combustible materials.

When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a premises liability claim. Depending on the unique facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any apartment fire in New York City. This includes the company that manufactured an e-scooter or other product that contains lithium-ion batteries.
