Several Injured in Mott Haven Apartment Fire on Easter

THE BRONX, NEW YORK (April 27, 2027) – At least five people were injured in a Mott Haven, Bronx apartment fire at 345 Cypress Ave.

New York City officials are saying that the fire took place around 2 PM on Easter Day. Firefighters were called to the six-story building after the fire spread to the top floor.

Roughly 180 firefighters and EMS responded to the fire. Two firefighters and three residents of the building sustained injuries.

The victims were in the middle of enjoying a family Easter dinner when they were evacuated. The source of the fire remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Bronx Apartment Fires

Residential fires remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death across New York. According to the NFSA, “the U.S. averages about 88,600 apartment building fires each year for the past ten years (2013-2022). In the 1980s, the U.S. averaged about 110,600 apartment building fires per year.” There are a number of common causes of residential fires.

  • Many apartment fires are the results of cooking accidents.
  • Fires may be the result of space heaters that are left too close to flammable materials.
  • A fire could start because of some type of electrical malfunction in a building.

Property owners have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for the protection of all people on a property whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their property, they must take action. In particular, there are a number of ways that a property owner can help prevent apartment fires.

  • Apartment owners should ensure that their building is compliant with all fire codes.
  • Apartment owners should ensure that no exits in an apartment are obstructed.
  • Apartment owners should ensure that all of the sprinklers and smoke alarms in their building are in working order.

When a property owner fails to protect the residence from a dangerous condition, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Any person injured in a residential fire may be able to seek some measure of accountability through  a personal injury claim. A personal injury claim can help accident victims recover many of the economic and non-economic damages that they suffer.
